It is a long day that starts before dawn, but a well-run tour makes it painless, and there is a smart one-way version that saves you a five-hour backtrack. Here is how it works. Is it worth doing from El Nido?
El Nido to the Underground River is a serious drive — roughly five to six hours each way — so a round-trip day means an early start and a lot of road. It is worth it if the Underground River is high on your list and you will not otherwise pass through Puerto Princesa. But if your Palawan route already ends in Puerto Princesa, it is far more relaxing to do the river from there. The smartest option of all, covered below, is to fold the river into your transfer day between the two towns.
The two ways to do it
Join an all-inclusive tour (recommended). Operators run door-to-door trips from El Nido that include the long drive in an air-conditioned van, lunch in Sabang, the boat and cave tour, the audio guide, the environmental fee, the permit and a guide. You are picked up at your El Nido hotel very early — typically between about 4:30 and 5:30 am — and returned in the evening. Everything is handled, which on a day this long is worth a great deal.
Do it yourself. Independent travellers can take a van or bus toward Puerto Princesa, get off at the Salvacion junction, and change to a van heading to Sabang, then arrange the cave permit and boat on arrival. It is cheaper but adds uncertainty to an already long day, and the connections eat into your time at the cave.
Timings and the Salvacion transfer
However you travel, the rhythm of the day is similar: a pre-dawn departure from El Nido, a long morning on the road (with the DIY route changing vehicles at the Salvacion junction), arrival at Sabang around late morning, lunch, the boat out to the park and the cave tour, then the long drive back. Expect to be out for the better part of 12 hours. Motion-sickness tablets are wise — the road is winding.
What to pack for the early start
Bring valid photo ID for the cave permit, water-ready footwear, a light jacket for the air-conditioned van, snacks for the road, and any motion-sickness remedy you might need. If you are doing the one-way version, keep your luggage packed and with you so you can continue straight to your Puerto Princesa hotel after the tour.

How much does it cost from El Nido?
An organised El Nido day trip or one-way transfer tour costs more than doing the river from Puerto Princesa itself, because you are paying for many more hours of van time over a long distance. In return you get a single, door-to-door booking with the drive, lunch, boat, permit and fees handled. Doing it independently is cheaper on paper but adds the cost and uncertainty of piecing together buses, vans and the permit yourself — on a day this long, most travellers happily pay for the tour.
What you will see at the cave
After the long drive, the reward is worth it. From the Sabang landing a paddle boat carries you into a limestone cave of soaring chambers, stalactites and stalagmites, with thousands of bats overhead and an audio guide narrating the formations. The standard tour covers about the first 1.5 kilometres of the 8.2-kilometre river over roughly 45 minutes. Fly, drive, or stay overnight?
If a full day on the road does not appeal, consider flying between El Nido and Puerto Princesa to shorten the journey, or simply build a night or two in Puerto Princesa into your route and do the river at a relaxed pace from there. Many travellers find that basing in Puerto Princesa for a couple of days — river, Honda Bay and fireflies — before or after El Nido is the most rewarding way to structure a Palawan trip.
Best time to do the trip from El Nido
As with the river from Puerto Princesa, the dry season (roughly November to May) gives the calmest seas for the short crossing at Sabang and the lowest chance of a weather cancellation. In the wetter months, rough water can close the crossing at short notice, which is especially frustrating after a long drive from El Nido — so build a spare day into your plans and, if you can, keep the trip flexible.
Should you stay overnight instead?
If the round-trip day feels too long, a gentler alternative is to move to Puerto Princesa for a night or two and do the Underground River from there at a relaxed pace, adding Honda Bay or a firefly cruise while you are in town. This turns a punishing day trip into an easy couple of days and lets you see more of what Puerto Princesa offers. Make the most of the long day
Whatever option you choose, treat the Underground River as the centrepiece and keep the rest of that day light.
